ADDISON, N.Y. ( WETM ) – Thousands in the Twin Tiers are still without power and part of the reason for that is fallen trees.

18 News spoke with crews cleaning up the mess about why so many trees came down. Crews are continuing to remove debris in Steuben County. Specifically, in the Village of Addison.

“There will be months and months of cleanup,” said Owner & Operator of Jerry’s Tree Service Jeremiah Sabol.

Thousands still without power in the Southern Tier

Sabol and his crew are just one of many tree services cleaning up the Twin Tiers after a series of storms earlier this week.

“I’d say one house would have to be entirely rebuilt from what the storm actually did. But, most houses. They just have a few punctures. There’s not a lot of extensive damage. But, there’s serious extensive damage to the trees. Trees are down everywhere in the Twin Tiers,” said Sabol.

Four trees fell on one of the houses they worked on.

“I’d say the biggest one we’ve done so far was 58 inches around at the base and 100 foot tall, laying on the customer’s house,” said Sabol.

But, why did so many of these trees come down?

“Some of it was deterioration in the trees. A lot of it was the trees were hollow. Nobody had any idea that the trees were, but first and foremost I’d say better than 100 mile per hour winds,” said Sabol.

18 News spoke to a NYSEG representative, who says there’s no set timetable for when power will be fully restored in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Counties.
