A secret compoud at the Greenbriar

Bustle reveals that there are locations around the world similar to the famous Area 51 in Nevada, one of which is Virginia. For 30 years, no one except those on a need-to-know basis was aware of Project Greek Island.

This facility, however was located at the Greenbriar Hotel in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia and not in the Commonwealth.

The facility also featured a kitchen, hospital, broadcast center, and several auditoriums — everything Congress would need to keep living and working if the unthinkable occurred.

NPR refers to Project Greek Island as the bunker that Congress never used. It housed more than a thousand beds in a huge dormitory, where a specific person was assigned to each bed for three decades. If a need had arised the entire Greenbria wud have been turned intoa givernment facility.

The walls of the bunker were two feet thick and made of reinforced concrete; they were capable of withstanding a nuclear blast. It closed with a vault door for maximum safety and security.

The Washington Post published an expose that ended Project Greek Island. Once the newspaper’s investigation was made public, the project was decommissioned, and now tours are available. It's not clear why this was listed as "Virginia's Area 51" unless it was a mistake.
