At RNC, Wisconsin fake electors find new role as delegates

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Republican Party sent 41 delegates and 38 alternate delegates to the Republican National Convention this week. At least two of them are accused of writing a document used in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

One such delegate is former Wisconsin Federation of Republican Women treasurer Pam Travis. She was a featured speaker at Wednesday's GOP Breakfast and was also on Sen. Ron Johnson's campaign staff for his successful re-election bid in 2022.

Wisconsin fake electors admit to writing document used in attempt to overturn 2020 presidential election

MADISON, Wis. -- A slate of fake electors in Wisconsin as part of a settlement Wednesday publicly admitted that they wrote a document used in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

"This really has been a very exciting convention," Travis told News 3 Now following the breakfast. "We've talked about what the solutions are, what President Trump plans to do, and we're inspired by JD Vance."

Travis was one of 10 fake electors who, as part of a December 2023 settlement in a civil lawsuit, publicly admitted to writing a certificate of votes at the request of former President Donald Trump's campaign that was used in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election. The group also publicly admitted that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election.

Another one of those fake electors was alternate delegate Bob Spindell, who also serves on the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

As part of the 2023 settlement, Travis, Spindell and the rest of the fake electors agreed to never serve as a presidential elector in an election featuring Trump. They also agreed to cooperate with any investigation by the Department of Justice into the 2020 election.

While the settlement brought an end to a civil suit, the fake electors could still face potential criminal charges. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul told News 3 Now that his office is still investigating the matter.

"The electors in Wisconsin, they were under the impression that this was all part of the legal routine, that there were challenges to the election underway in the courts," Matt DeFour, who covers state and local government for Wisconsin Watch, told News 3 Now.

Kaul did bring felony forgery charges last month against Trump attorneys Jim Troupis and Kenneth Chesebro, as well as aide Mike Roman, for their alleged roles in the 2020 fake elector plot.

Attorney charged in 2020 fake elector plot suspended from Judicial Conduct Advisory Comittee

MADISON, Wis. -- One of the attorneys charged last week for their alleged role in trying to submit fake elector paperwork after the 2020 presidential election was temporarily suspended Tuesday from Wisconsin's Judicial Conduct Advisory Committee, the state Supreme Court ordered.

Initial appearances for those three men are scheduled for Sept. 19.

In a statement to News 3 Now regarding Travis and Spindell's roles, RNC spokesperson Anna Kelly said "State delegations are made up of delegates elected by their peers at the state party level."
