SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Day one of the 100th Solemn Novena at St. Ann’s Basilica is underway.

Tents, chairs, and green spaces were filled throughout the mass in Monday afternoon, and so was the Basilica.

With the summer heat, St. Ann’s has the option for attendees to cool off and watch the mass inside the basilica with a live stream of the mass taking place outside.

There’s also an option to listen to the mass from your car on the radio, guests just need to tune into 90.1 FM, but despite the heat and the summer showers, the Novena has become a tradition for many to attend to.

“Well I’ve been doing it for many many years and its just such a beautiful thing, many prayers have been answered, I think its beautiful. I don’t know where all those years went, but its just a beautiful time I really enjoy it,” stated Nancy Matticks of Scranton.

“Its a really wonderful opportunity for the kind of bonding to take place among people that Jesus envisioned when he created us.” explained FR. Richard Burke, rector at St. Ann’s Basillica.

There is another mass coming up at 5:30 p.m. Monday night and then a mass in Spanish at 7:30 p.m.
