Most science fiction movie franchises that get past six films are fairly impressive. Way back before the MCU blew up in 2012 or the Star Wars sequels began in 2015, sci-fi film franchises generally didn’t get into the double-digits. In fact, the seemingly immortal Planet of the Apes franchise just now released its 10th film overall. Star Wars has 11 theatrical films, but five of those all came out in the last nine years. This summer, the Alien franchise will release its ninth film in very fragmented continuity, which funnily enough, has the subtitle Romulus, a term that was arguably popularized by the scrappiest science fiction franchise of them all — Star Trek.

Star Trek is one of the biggest and oldest sci-fi franchise stalwarts. By the time George Lucas brought Star Wars back in 1999 with The Phantom Menace, Star Trek was already nine movies deep, on what felt like its third reboot, and was in the middle of its fourth major TV series. Since then, the TV side of Trek has continued to diversify and grow into the 21st century, while Trek’s film output has been much smaller than it was back in the day.

Originally, we thought the film would be a prequel film to the Kelvin timeline. Featuring the story of how that universe had its first contact and the fallout after it. Then we got the awful news that this other new film would be a sequel/prequel to the main Star Trek timeline.

Paramount+ today announced that Karim Diané (One Of Us Is Lying) and Zoë Steiner (Significant Others) have joined the cast of the original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The upcoming series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. Produced by CBS Studios, the new series will begin production later this summer.

Paramount has struggled to get a Star Trek movie together since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond underperformed. Since then, the fourth (and likely final) Abramsverse film has been in development hell. As a result, it looks like the next Star Trek movie will be yet another origin story. The reasoning behind this is so that newcomers can have an entry point to the franchise that doesn’t require previous knowledge. Unfortunately, it does so at the cost of almost 70 years of fans who are tired of seeing Star Trek stuck in neutral.
