JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The Republican National Convention (RNC) has been a celebration for most of the week as former President Donald Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance received the official nomination from the party.

Following last week’s assassination attempt on Trump, Mississippi Republicans said the party is as united as ever.

“We really feel like we’re going to get President Trump back in the White House. People are excited, they’re energized,” said U.S. Rep. Mike Ezell (R-Miss.).

The confidence stems from what Republicans said have been four years of bad policy from President Joe Biden.

“Our grocery bills are so much higher. We’re not respected and feared around the world. We have a border that is completely unsecured and have illegal aliens streaming over it. People are looking back, and they’re considering, ‘Am I better off today than I was when President Trump was in the White House?’ And I don’t think anyone can say they are,” said Mike Hurst, chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party.

Mississippi’s Republicans have also embraced Vance, who is a current U.S. Senator from Ohio. The former Marine and Yale Law School graduate had no political experience before entering the Senate. He rose to national prominence after the release of his best-selling book Hillbilly Elegy , which chronicles his poor upbringing in Appalachia and his family’s struggle with substance abuse.

“You know, J.D. has not been in politics very long, well, neither has Trump. I like his stances on Ukraine and the border and all those big topics,” said State Rep. Fred Shanks (D-District 60).

“We can relate to that. So many folks in Mississippi that have grown up working hard for a living and making good for themselves,” said Ezell.
