The world was shocked and disbelieving when the news of basketball legend Kobe Bryant's death spread. Today, the world gathers to pay tribute to another notable figure, Joe "Jelly Bean" Bryant.
Kobe's father said his final goodbyes to the world on Tuesday, July 16. With the passing of this basketball legend and much reflection on Joe Bryant's achievements, one thing is clear: greatness runs in the family.
Joe Bryant Builds A Legacy
Bryant's illustrious career started at Lasalle University. The university remembers him fondly as a key member of the 1975 East Coast Conference Championship team, which earned the Explorers a coveted NCAA Tournament berth.
His exceptional skill level distinguished him from his peers and cemented his place in history. According to Lasalle's Go Explorers, Bryant ranks seventh in career rebounding average (11.9), ninth in scoring average (20.7), and tenth in career field goal percentage (48.6).
With such talent and determination, he quickly rose to prominence in the NBA. For eight years, Joe Bryant played in a staggering 606 games for three different teams. Throughout his career with the Sixers, the San Diego Clippers, and the Houston Rockets, he averaged 8.8 points and 4.0 rebounds. He also took his talent abroad, playing in Italy and France after establishing himself in the States.
Joe Bryant And His Exemplary Contributions
Joe Bryant was a one-of-a-kind athlete who excelled not only on the basketball court. He used his experience and skills to mentor others. Later, he continued his contributions by coaching at his alma mater and in the WNBA after retiring. In 1981, he was inducted into the Big5 Hall of Fame, which recognized his contributions and achievements in the sport.
It Runs In The Blood
There is no doubt that Kobe Bryant inherited his extraordinary talent from his father, Joe "Jelly Bean" Bryant. Kobe Bryant inherited more than just his father's skills. The elder Bryant instilled in his son a deep love and passion for basketball.
In an audio clip, Kobe Bryant recalls his father's words that encouraged him to pursue his interests:
As a proud son, Bryant expressed how this was a confidence builder.
If there is any doubt about who Joe Bryant was as a human being, statements like these demonstrate the philosophy and character of a legacy maker.
Farewell To A Giant
Today, we honor Joe Bryant for his dedication, talents, and love of the game. He was a remarkable human who embodied the NBA's core values throughout his career: "to inspire and unite people worldwide through the game of basketball." May he rest peacefully.
