Joy Reid Briefly Equates Biden’s Covid Bout with Trump’s Near Assassination: ‘Isn’t That Exactly the Same?’

MSNBC’s Joy Reid questioned whether President Joe Biden’s Wednesday Covid diagnosis should be viewed in the same manner as former President Donald Trump’s survival of an assassination attempt last weekend, should the president recover and hit the campaign trail afterward.

Reid argued that Trump was viewed largely as having shown “strength” by traveling to the Republican National Convention on schedule less than 48 hours after he was shot through the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

She also made the case that at his age, Biden should similarly be viewed as strong and vigorous if and when he returns from 10 days of isolation in Delaware and hits the campaign trail.

During MSNBC’s ongoing coverage of the GOP convention in Milwaukee, network host Jen Psaki argued that due to Biden’s political troubles in the wake of his poor debate performance last month against Trump, Democrats need him to show he is up to the task of beating, Covid Trump and governing the country.

“They need to show him strong and powerful,” Psaki argued. “They have a more immediate challenge right now, which is projecting to the Democratic Party he’s inevitable and up to the job.”

Reid interjected to comment on the perception of Trump’s brush with death and argued that if Biden kicks the virus , the two men’s struggles should be viewed as similar if not “the same.”

“Here’s the question that I have on that. These two men are both elderly. Donald Trump is an elderly man who for whatever reason was given nine seconds to take an iconic photo op during an active shooter situation,” Reid said.

    She continued:

Weird situation, we’ll figure that out one day. But his survival of that and bouncing right back and going right to his convention is being conveyed in the media world as a sign of strength. This current president of the United States is 81-years-old and has Covid, should he be fine in a couple of days, doesn’t that convey exactly the same thing? That he’s strong enough – older than Trump – to have gotten something that used to really be fatal to people his age.

So, if he does fine out of it and comes back and is able to do rallies, isn’t that exactly the same?

Reid interrupted Psaki’s response to state, “I mean, it’s not exactly the same, it’s not the same incident, but it’s an elderly man coming out of an illness.”
