CNN’s Van Jones Paints Bleak Picture for Democrats: ‘A Bullet Couldn’t Stop Trump, a Virus Just Stopped Biden’

CNN’s Van Jones painted a bleak picture for Democrats heading into November during the network’s coverage of the ongoing coverage of the Republican National Convention on Wednesday.

President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid-19 earlier in the evening and flew to Delaware to isolate as more high-profile Democrats call on him to drop his reelection bid.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump made his first public appearance – at his party’s convention on Monday – adorning a bandage on his ear after he was grazed by a would-be assassin’s bullet on Saturday in Pennsylvania.

Given Biden’s political struggles since his poor debate performance against Trump last month, the positive Covid test, and the fact that some of Trump’s most ardent critics have coalesced around him this week in Milwaukee, Jones said he saw two candidates and two parties headed in opposite directions.

“There are a lot of people who want Biden to stay in,” Jones said. “I want to just keep pointing out, there is still a grassroots love for Joe Biden.” He concluded:

But today is a terrible day. If you pull back and look at this thing – strength versus weakness – a bullet couldn’t stop Trump, a virus just stopped Biden. You’ve got the nominees of this party getting their butts kissed. Biden’s getting his butt kicked by his own party. The Democrats are coming apart. The Republicans are coming together, that’s what’s happened. And at some point, this party has to look at the reality of that.

Biden had faced calls from members of his party to step down before Trump was targeted Saturday night during an attack that wounded the former president, killed one of his supporters, and wounded two.

Beginning earlier this week, calls for the president to step aside began to ramp up again. Those who have reportedly urged Biden to end his campaign include Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries .
