President Joe Biden has reportedly become privately “receptive” to calls on him to suspend his reelection campaign as a growing number of Democrats are asking him publicly and privately to step aside amid concerns about his cognitive health and electability.

CNN chief national affairs correspondent Jeff Zeleny joined the network’s coverage of the Republican National Convention with an update about whether the president is willing to listen to those urging him to end his reelection bid .

The report came hours after it was confirmed Biden had tested positive for Covid-19 and would be sidelined while he is isolating at home in Delaware.

Asked by CNN host Jake Tapper what he had been hearing, Zeleny said he had just spoken with a person he called a “senior Democratic adviser” who said Biden is beginning to listen to those wanting him to step aside. Zeleny reported:

Well, Jake, we know as President Biden is flying back to the east coast tonight after testing positive for Covid, as you said, in cutting his trip to Las Vegas short. We know that he is facing a potentially a new moment in his campaign. He’s been hearing for the last several days from Democratic lawmakers, officials, and others about their concerns about his path forward here and talking to a senior Democratic adviser tonight who is telling me this.

Zeleny said his source had explained that Biden is listening to such a degree that he has asked those close to him if they believe Vice President Kamala Harris could win if she were the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee:

[The source] said he believes the president is being “more receptive to these calls of concern.” He goes on to say this: “The private conversations with the Hill are continuing.” This adviser tells me, “He’s being receptive, not as defiant as he is publicly.” He goes on to say, talking about Vice President Kamala Harris, who initially he wondered how she may fare in a campaign should it come to that, I’m told now he’s asking questions saying, “Do you think Kamala can win?”

Zeleny cautioned that the adviser he spoke to said that while Biden is now listening to those calling on him to step aside , he has not decided on the matter.

“Jake what we do know, this is a new moment for President Biden,” Zeleny concluded. “Tomorrow marks three weeks since the debate in Atlanta. As you well know, he’s heard so much concern from across the Democratic Party. Time is running short. The Democratic National Committee was thinking about starting their nomination process next week. That it is now on hold. That will not begin until August 1st. So there’s a bit of time for the president to make this decision.”

Zeleny’s reporting came on the heels of a separate report that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer visited Biden in Delaware last weekend to ask him to drop out of the race.

Jonathan Karl with ABC News reported that hours before former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, Schumer “forcefully made the case that it would be better for Biden, better for the Democratic Party, and better for the country if he were to bow out.”
