WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Sedgwick County is making sure it follows the law when it comes to public information.

Commissioners passed a Kansas Open Records Act compliance program policy.

Under state law, government agencies have three days to respond to someone’s request for public information.

Staff says this can be tough, given the number of requests they receive.

“It can range anywhere from 1,400 to 1,700 per month, averages right around 1,600 per month, and that is for every department, including myself,” said Records Manager and Freedom of Information Officer Jennifer Scriven.

The new policy provides procedures and the framework for compliance. The county has been trying to pass it since 2020.
