Breanna Stewart's bold Caitlin Clark stance pays off after WNBA history made

Caitlin Clark has made history once again but this time set a new WNBA record - after recording 19 assists as the Indiana Fever lost 101-93 against the Dallas Wings .

Clark also became the fastest WNBA player to reach 400+ points and 200+ assists, doing so in just 26 games to break Sue Bird's record (33). The No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft has been writing women's basketball history since she became a star in college at Iowa , entering an famous beef with LSU guard Angel Reese .

Earlier this month, Clark became the first WNBA rookie in history to record a triple-double, but now she has a record that surpasses all other players to compete in the league. Her 24 points, 19 assists, and 6 rebounds were still not enough to earn a win over the Dallas Wings, a team that recorded just its sixth win of the season. Clark is surging toward winning the WNBA Rookie of the Year award, although her season hasn't been straightforward.

Clark and the Fever found winning tough during the opening weeks of the season, but she was sent a message of support by fellow WNBA star Breanna Stewart . Clark has also not been at her collegiate best when shooting, despite averaging 17.3 points this season, but Stewart was convinced she would adapt - and she was right.

The early-season criticism seemed harsh, and at present Clark still leads all rookies in scoring while continuing to improve playmaking as teammates learn when to expect passes.

The spotlight has been on Clark since the 2022 national championship game, and momentum built throughout her final collegiate year to a level where she was bigger than most other NCAA athletes across all sports. And Stewart was convinced Clark would settle in if people gave her grace.

"She's gonna turn into a really, really great pro. But, also people need to give her a little bit of time to be up and down, and kind of figure it out, and also realize there's an adjustment when you go from college to pro in any level," Stewart said on the Pat McAfee show in May. "As you can see, she's starting to get more comfortable."

Stewart, who is on the Liberty, has faced Clark on the court this season and has a lot of respect for the newest women's basketball star. Stewart was named WNBA MVP last season, the second time she's earned that honor, and she knows exactly what Clark is going through.

"When I was a rookie it felt like every night was a welcome to the league moment," Stewart added. "For Caitlin, I think that for guards that are guarding her want to make it really difficult. Following the scout, knowing she's a focal point of their offense. We have to do whatever we can to not get comfortable."

Stewart was the No. 1 pick in 2016 when she was selected by the Seattle Storm and earned Rookie of the Year status. It wasn't until 2017 that she became an All-Star, and it took an extra year to win her first WNBA championship in 2017. Stewart is certain Clark will be the dominant star everyone is expecting, and on Wednesday night she made another statement.
