HONOLULU (KHON2) — A $100,000 donation has been made to Scouting America, Aloha Council from Whittier Trust.

The funds are expected to replace five Pop Hutton cabins at Camp Maluhia on Maui, which were named after William H. “Pop” Hutton, the first Council executive of the Maui County Council.

Officials said the structures are 75 years old and have suffered severe termite damage, along with expected wear and tear.

The donation follows Whittier Trusts’s $50,000 donation in 2023, which was used for other camp improvements.

“We are excited to support Maui Scouting and are deeply impressed by the ‘Be Prepared’ mentality of the Maui Scouts,” said David Dahl, President and CEO of Whittier Trust Company. “Their quick response during the recent wildfires, including hosting displaced families and over 100 Red Cross workers, along with organizing supply drives and other emergency operations, truly exemplifies the spirit of Scouting.”

The camp is already experiencing significant infrastructure and facility upgrades to better serve Scouts and the community.

“We are incredibly thankful to Whittier Trust for their continued support. These cabins are not only essential for our Maui Scouts but also serve the greater community. This generous gift will ensure that Camp Maluhia continues to be a haven for outdoor education and community activities,” Blake Parsons, CEO of Scouting America, Aloha Council said.

The camp was developed through a partnership in 1937 with the concept of community. This partnership included the Maui County Council-Girl Scouts, the Maui County Council-Boy Scouts of America and Alexander House.
