New York Jets 2024 NFL Training Camp Preview

The New York Jets had a cataclysmic 2024 season after newly-acquired Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending achilles tear less than a handful of snaps into the season. Are they prime for a bounce-back 2024 season with a healthy Rodgers? Let’s dive into their training camp preview!

    Three Position Battles To Watch:

WR3: Xavier Gipson , Malachi Corley

Gipson, who signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023, saw an expanded role throughout the season in New York’s offense. He recorded 21 catches for 229 yards across 17 games and could be in-line for an even bigger role in 2024. Though the Jets drafted the “YAC King” in Malachi Corley in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-11 wideout dominated his last two seasons at Western Kentucky, recording over 2,300 yards with 22 scores. If Rodgers can reliably trust a rookie wideout, I see no reason why he can’t have a role this season.

RB2: Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis, Israel Abanikanda

I think Allen is the favorite to win the second running back spot, but this is a conversation that is worth having. Allen and Davis are both power backs, but Abanikanda is the only other tailback on the roster who has NFL experience, albeit limited. Allen, a fourth-round pick, has a freak physical body and Davis is another physical back–who tested as well as Allen at the combine–who it took a round later. Abanikanda had just 22 carries for 70 yards, but could still earn the backup job with an impressive camp.

DT2: Javon Kinlaw , Leki Fotu , Solomon Thomas

Quinnen Williams is the leader in the clubhouse. He’s the only one with a solidified job. Kinlaw signed with New York this offseason and offers pass-rushing upside; Fotu, a former fourth-round selection from the Cardinals, had the best season of his career last year, tallying 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 11 games; Thomas also had a career year last year with five sacks and seven tackles-for-loss in 17 games. The Jets deepened their defensive line depth and I think all three can be impactful in the rotation, but one must be decided to start alongside Williams; Kinlaw is currently the presumptive favorite.

Rookie To Watch: Braelon Allen, RB

Coming off a torn ACL, Breece Hall tallied 994 yards on 4.5 yards per carry with five scores last season. His offensive line is still subpar, which terrifies me in terms of his short- and long-term health upside. That’s where Allen, New York’s fourth-round pick, comes in. He’s not a pure pass-catcher and has struggled to hold onto the rock, but he’s got an NFL-ready body and is just 20-years-old. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry with 49 career touchdowns in three seasons at Wisconsin and could be quite productive in short-yardage situations as a rookie.

Ready to Breakout: Garrett Wilson , WR

This may be the improper category to put Wilson in because he’s already been very successful in his first two seasons. But I think he can reach another stratosphere with a healthy Aaron Rodgers. He’s already recorded a pair of 1,000-yard seasons with Zach Wilson and Mike White behind center. He has yet to reach the endzone more than four times in a single season, where I think his fantasy upside is predicated on. He can break out as a very good wide receiver into an elite one this season, should Rodgers stay healthy.

Zach Wilson Traded To The Denver Broncos

Fantasy Sleeper: Tyler Conklin , TE

Conklin, who’s listed as TE24 in Fantasy Pros’ database, has sneakily been a productive tight end despite having poor QB play. He’s only found the end zone six times over the last three years, but has recorded 180 receptions for 1,766 yards. That’s not terrible. I think his upside is predicated on whether Rodgers, 40, stays healthy. He can be a valuable pass-catching option if that’s the case.
