RJ Luis wasn’t going to let his troublesome shins impact another season, so he underwent surgery on both of them.

St. John’s leading returning scorer is coming along well after the procedures.

He has begun doing individual and non-contact workouts, and doctors have told him he’ll be able to practice fully in September.

Luis tried custom insoles and shock therapy, but that didn’t work.

He was still bothered by shin splints in both legs. That’s no longer the case after the operations, termed muscle compartment release.

“I got new legs now,” the 6-foot-7 wing, who averaged 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds last year, joked on Wednesday during a Name, Image & Likeness event with St. John’s fans . “The pain is gone. Right now I’m just trying to get back into rhythm. My bounce isn’t all there yet. … As far as strength wise, I feel [good].”

Luis’ first year as a Johnnie was frustrating. He missed a bulk of the preseason with a broken left hand, then the shins acted up. He was limited to 23 games and rarely was able to practice.

He did show glimpses of his immense potential.

The Johnnies were 10-4 when Luis scored in double figures.

Zuby Ejiofor was one of St. John’s most improved players from the start of last season to its finish.

The 6-foot-9 rising junior is one option to be the starting center, along with USC transfer Vince Iwuchukwu and Portuguese import Ruben Prey.

“That’s what I look forward to,” Ejiofor said. “It’s going to be a little bit of competition back and forth, and that’s how it’s really got to be. You got to claim your spot and when you have the opportunity, you have to grab it.”

Ejiofor does have an advantage since he’s been in the program for a year already, and finished last year well.

“I gained a lot of confidence,” he said. “I figured out what Coach [Rick] Pitino wants from me. I just did all the little things it takes to win games.”

Kadary Richmond hasn’t given much thought to returning to Newark to face his old team, Seton Hall.

“I think it’s just going to be another game,” one of St. John’s two new point guards said. “There might be some boos, but that comes with it.”
