    Here are 15 things to do this weekend in North Jersey, including lots of free live music

    It's going to be a perfect summer weekend in North Jersey and there is plenty to do outdoors (and indoors, too!).

    Free summer concerts are still taking place all over the region, like the Georgia 5 in Edgewater, Second Contact in Hackensack, the B Street Band in the Township of Washington, a jazz festival in Orange, the Chapel Concert Band in Lincoln Park. If you like your music indoors, there's The Cream of Clapton in Montclair, Total Mass Retain in Rutherford and Mixtape Meltdown in Woodland Park. For some musical theater, Sussex County Community College has you covered with "Alice at Heart."

    Plus, there's pickleball in Tenafly, arena football at American Dream, a free outdoor movie ("Under the Boardwalk") in Paramus, a historical science presentation at Field Station: Dinosaurs, a comedy show with five stand-ups in Teaneck, and an art exhibit in Clifton.

    The Georgia 5: '80s Dance Party in Edgewater

    Part of the free Edgewater Summer Concert Series, the Georgia 5 will play the feel-good hits from the first decade of MTV - songs by the Cars, Loverboy, Prince, Huey Lewis, Squeeze, the J. Geils Band, David Bowie, Rick Springfield, the Stray Cats, the Buggles, Human League and the Knack. The viewing area will be on the Veterans Field great lawn along the Hudson River. No seating is provided, so bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. Presented by Edgewater Recreation Department, the mayor and council.

    SCCC alumnus directs college’s summer musical 'Alice by Heart'

    The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Sussex County Community College presents its summer show, “Alice by Heart,” a musical inspired by "Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland," with music by Tony- and Grammy-winners, Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, and book by Steven Sater and Jessie Nelson. Performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

    “Alice By Heart” takes place in the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, when Alice’s life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend, Alfred, are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. Alice confronts grief, loss and love with the help of her favorite book, "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland." This show is rated PG-13.

    This is the second year the SCCC’s theater program is performing a summer production, with special guest director SCCC alumnus Alex McCully of Newton. The production team includes music director Dr. Deborah Gianuzzi of Newton, who is also the coordinator of music at SCCC; choreographer Kimberly Jackson of Newton; stage manager Jodi Halteman of Andover; costume and properties manager Sarah Hale of Oxford; technical director Phil Cocilovo of Montague; and producer Allison Ognibene of Sparta, SCCC theater liaison.

    The cast and production crew include Hilary Beirne, Eliza Halteman, Felicia Artrip and Hailey Philips, all of Andover; Katie O’Shea of Budd Lake; Mark Squindo of Califon; Chris Flatt of Hamburg; Matthew Steen of Long Valley; Joshua Lauder of Mount Olive; Zac Cruz, Avery Frank, Lisa Geerhart, Romell Kota and Stephanie Gianuzzi, all of Newton; Sky Sobeski of Sparta; AJ Amella, Cesar Arana and Sam Bloch, all of Stanhope; Dana Nigro, Leo Watson and Nina Bennett, all of Stillwater; and Isabella Cruz and Catarina Cruz, all of Vernon.

    Bergen Volunteers hosts pickleball fundraising, networking event

    Bergen Volunteers invites pickleball enthusiasts of all skills, as well as community advocates, to its fundraising event, Paddles and Prosecco, on Thursday at Bergen County Pickleball Club.

    Supporting this event aids social service programs offered by Bergen Volunteers at little to no cost to those in need. The Hackensack-based nonprofit serves constituents in all 70 municipalities through its programs including Chore, Cheer, mentoring and Bergen Reads.

    Attendees can anticipate a night of activities suitable for all skill levels, along with shopping the vendor village, bidding in a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and food and drinks. Pickleball beginners are welcome and lessons are available.

    33rd Arena Bowl Championship game at American Dream

    The Arena Bowl is the North American Championship event of the Arena Football League, featuring the league's top teams battling for glory and halftime entertainment. Meet Jeff Fisher, the new commissioner of the AFL, as he brings football to the East Rutherford mall.

    Second Contact performs in Hackensack

    This free live performance of classic rock hits from the '70s, '80s and more, is part of the outdoor Sounds of Summer concert series.

    The Cream of Clapton Band at the Wellmont

    Endorsed by the man himself, family, friends and bandmates celebrate Clapton’s record-breaking "24 Nights" at the Royal Albert Hall in 1991. Joining the band's founding members - Will Johns (Clapton’s nephew) and Noah East (son of Nathan) - is drummer Steve Ferrone and special guest Nathan East, who was Clapton's bass player for more than 40 years.

    The Cream of Clapton Band will play "Cocaine," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Badge" and "Layla," as well as songs from the albums "Behind the Sun," "August" and "Journeyman."

    'Under the Boardwalk' at Van Saun Park in Paramus

    Part of the Bergen County Department of Parks' free Movies & Music in the Park series, "Under the Boardwalk" will be shown at Van Saun County Park in Paramus on Friday. Bring a chair or blanket. From the director of "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie" comes this fun beach adventure in which an epic journey to find home leads a shy crab (Michael Cera) and his new friend (Keke Palmer) to discover a whole world beyond the boardwalk.

    Jazz Festival & The Food Truck Flavor Faire

    Part of the Essex County Summer Music Concert Series presented by the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, this free event at Monte Irvin Orange Park will feature the Violin Diva Charisa featuring Winard Harper and Jeli Posse, Ultras, Mpack, Yayoi Ikawa Trio In, Blues People, Dermel Warren and Friends, Nat Adderly Jr. Quartet, John Lee & Friends, rapper Samad Savage, festival MC/singer Lynette Sheard, festival hosts NEA Jazz Master Dorthaan Kirk and Rutgers IJS Wayne Winborne.

    Meet Dr. Leidy at Field Station: Dinosaurs

    Part of the Super Stars of Science series, geologist Marc Rogoff portrays Joseph Leidy, known as “The Last Man Who Knew Everything," at Field Station: Dinosaurs in Overpeck Park.

    Leidy was a surgeon, paleontologist, parasitologist, geologist and forensic scientist. He named and described the first nearly complete dinosaur ever uncovered, the Hadrosaurus, which is the official state dinosaur of New Jersey. This event is free with day pass admission.

    The B Street Band, Springsteen tribute in Washington

    Part of the Washington Township Public Affairs & Recreation Department presents the B Street Band - A Tribute to the Boss will perform a free concert at Memorial Field at Pascack Road on Saturday. The Jersey band has been rocking Bruce fans since 1980. Conrad's Ice Cream and Bob O's Cheesesteak truck will sell food on site.

    Chapel Concert Band at Lincoln Park Community Lake

    The Chapel Concert Band continues its summer concert series Saturday, performing a variety of music, from patriotic and big band to classical and more in Lincoln Park. Hosted by the Lincoln Park Library.

    Total Mass Retain - Yes tribute band

    Progstock presents Total Mass Retain, which recreates the energy and precision of Yes music live, and is endorsed by the band itself. For this event on Saturday in Rutherford, TMR will perform a different setlist than its shows from the first half of 2024. The concert will feature a laser light show.

    Mixtape Meltdown at the Great Notch Inn

    Mixtape Meltdown returns to the Notch on Saturday to deliver a mix of hits from the classic rock, '80s, and '90s eras. The band - Ali McDowell (lead vocals, guitar) and Lou Tambone (vocals, drums), both of Woodland Park; Matty Zmigrodski of Hawthorne (lead guitar, vocals); Keith Verkem of Glen Rock (keyboards, vocals); and Alan Tepper of Randolph (bass, vocals) - encourages singing along and audience participation, and does its best to take requests.

    'Old Skool Comedy Show' in Teaneck

    On Sunday, Black Box Studios presents "Old Skool Comedy Show" at Debonair Music Hall, featuring Mark Riccadonna, Christy Miller, Erik Marino, and Mike Bocchetti, along with Jason Pollack.

    Riccadonna is a comedian, actor, writer and director, with his short film “Through Open Doors” being featured at the Cannes Film Festival. His podcast is Drinks Jokes and Storytelling," which is also the name of his latest album. Miller is a 28-year comedy vet that hosts the Old Skool New Skool Comedy podcast about the old days versus the new days of the comedy industry.

    Marino is a former "Saturday Night Live" writer and claims, "I can make anyone 17% funnier. That's the Marino guarantee!" Bocchetti has been in the New York comedy and acting scene since 1992. He has been seen in Adult Swim promos, MTV’s "Silent Library," and the feature films "Far Away Eyes" and "The Family."

    'Artistic Endeavors' at Clifton Arts Center

    This exhibit, on view through Aug. 10, by the Clifton Association of Artists showcases artistic endeavors with art media such as oil, acrylic, pastels, photography, watercolor and sculpture, from amateur and professional artists.

    The Clifton Association of Artists was established in 1963 by a group of 12 Clifton artists. Its mission is "to promote the advancement of art and culture in Clifton by creating an environment for the expression of the visual arts."
