EXCLUSIVE: Here’s the plan for the 2024 Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF).

The 38th edition of the fest will run from November 1-17 at venues across the UK city, with screenings held at the Everyman Leeds, Vue Leeds in the Light, Hyde Park Picture House and Howard Assembly Room.

A full program will be announced in October when tickets and passes are made available. Film submissions are being accepted until July 31. Furthermore, 20 programmers have been added to the team, all of whom were made from open applications and with an eye on championing new talent and supporting those at entry-level.

The fest plays more than 250 features and shorts each year, with annual submissions of over 5,000 coming from more than 120 countries.

This year, spotlights will shine on late Indian actress Smita Patil and Stuart Croft, the Leeds-based artist-filmmaker who passed away in 2015.

In ‘Celebrating Smita Patil: A Film Retrospective,’ LIFF will celebrate the work of the Patil, who was just 31 when she passed away in 1986. She made her screen debut in 1975 and over the following 11 years collaborated with many of the best filmmakers of her generation. She became the face of Parallel Cinema, India’s first post-colonial art film movemen, and LIFF retrospective will aim to highlight her films, activism and stardom.

Croft’s work crossed the boundaries of art galleries and cinema, with his exhibitions shown everywhere from New York to Beijing. A special season of films that inspired his vision will be paired with his own looping moving image works. The retrospective will complement an immersive exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery beginning in November.

LIFF Director Chris Fell said: “With the dates and venues for LIFF 2024 now confirmed, we are thrilled to introduce our fantastic new and expanded programming team as we aim to bring an even more diverse and wider range of film discoveries to Leeds from across the UK and around the world.

“We are also delighted to announce two unique spotlights for LIFF 2024: the first UK retrospective of films by Indian cinema icon Smita Patil, and a focus on Leeds artist-filmmaker Stuart Croft, exploring his special relationship with cinema.”
