Liverpool sent new one-word Anthony Gordon message as transfer stance confirmed

Liverpool has been told it won’t be able to revisit its interest in Anthony Gordon this summer , with Newcastle determined to keep hold of the forward.

The Reds pulled out of an attempt to bring Gordon to Anfield earlier this summer. Talks broke down over a potential transfer when Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah to move in the opposite direction.

The discussions came as the Magpies tried desperately to raise funds before the Premier League ’s PSR deadline, knowing the sort of punishment that could lie in wait had they breached the financial rules. They eventually got over the line with the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson .

It was suggested at the time though that talks could be revived with Liverpool, especially with Gordon having reportedly had his head turned by the interest coming from Anfield. Newcastle CEO Darren Eales though has insisted the club has no plans to revisit any potential big-name departures.

"In the end, we had to do the deals that were right for the club (PSR wise), that made us compliant,” Eales told ChronicleLive . “So, from that perspective, we did what we had to do. But we kept what I would say are our core players, the type of players like [Alexander] Isak, Gordon, Bruno [Guimaraes], Joelinton - those players who are our core.

"Now it's a case of OK, with that new cycle ahead of us now, how can we look to strengthen? How can we look to go to the next level?"

Asked whether Newcastle would begin the new season with Gordon, Isak and Guimaraes still at the club, Eales simply responded: "Yes!"

Gordon will return to Newcastle later this summer, having been part of the England squad that reached the final of Euro 2024. It was a somewhat frustrating tournament for Gordon though, who made just one appearance from the bench out in Germany.

"From a personal capacity it was a shame that he didn't get more time because as we saw last season, Anthony can be a very dangerous player,” Eales said. “He was one of the main attacking threats in the Premier League last season.

"We also saw the way that Eddie [Howe] developed him because when he came midway through last season even Anthony will accept it took him a bit of time to get up to speed.

"But we saw that way that Eddie can develop players and that is something that is Eddie's big strength and what makes him such a good club manager because he has that day-to-day contact with the players out on the grass.

"That is psychological as well as a physical and tactical perspective. So for us Anthony's one of the many weapons we've got, that is the excitement we've got."

Liverpool.com says: A return for Gordon might be unlikely this summer, but in engaging in those talks earlier in the summer, Liverpool has at least planted the seed. The winger will now be aware that there is interest in him from Anfield, and it seems he would be keen on the move.

That puts the pressure on Newcastle this season – if they don’t qualify for Europe, they may find themselves in a similar position next season with their big stars, and those players may push harder for a move away.
