Steambath heatwave breaks & humidity finally begins to abate Northeast & Mid Atlantic

The break in the heat, and more importantly, the break in the humidity is on the way but it is going to take its time dropping southward. Southern New Jersey, Eastern Long Island & Southeastern New England probably won't see much humidity relief today but areas north and west of Philadelphia, New York City & Boston will see dew points ease during the day. Coastal areas may have to wait until Friday morning. However the dew points are coming off such extreme levels that it will still start to feel better as the day wears on.

Temperatures are going to be lower today everywhere by about 10 degrees or so and for the first time this wee we have no heat advisories or excessive heat warnings in effect. Showers and thunderstorms from last night are now offshore and we will see a slow decreasing in cloud cover and a slow increase in sunshine. Temperatures in most areas today will top out in the middle to upper 80s which is about where we should be according to long term averages.

Any lingering showers, and there are a few on the radar should gradually disappear and skies tonight will clear with most lows Friday morning in the 60s. Urban areas will be in the mid to upper 60s while inland areas could drop to the upper 50s and lower 60s. Friday should be a nice sunny day with reasonable humidity levels. Highs will be in the low to middle 80s in most places.

Yesterdays' cold front is going to stall across the Middle Atlantic states back to the lower Ohio Valley. Along and south of the front it will be very warm, sticky, and there will be showery rains and thunderstorms from time to time over the next several days and right through the weekend. The Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states will be protected from this to a large degree. There is just enough of a northwest flow aloft to keep any showery rains at bay through the weekend.

It won't be picture perfect this weekend and the humidity levels will come up a bit but not get out of hand. That should leave us in a partly sunny place for Saturday and Sunday. We will leave any showers or thunderstorms out of the forecast as they should stay to the south. Highs both Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid to upper 80s with cooler temperatures along the shore.

We do not see a return to extreme heat next week though temperatures Monday will probably reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees for highs. However we do see a wetter pattern setting up next week as some of that tropical moisture to the south begins to move northward. Showers and thunderstorms are possible late Monday into Monday night. Beyond Monday we see opportunities for showers and thunderstorms for just about every day next week however this doesn't mean that it rains all the time. Under this pattern temperatures will be in the 80s for highs but humidity levels will be on the high side.
