For the first time in 13 years, drivers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania will have to pay more to cross the Delaware River Port Authority’s four bridges.

On Wednesday, the DRPA approved a $1 toll increase from $5 to $6 for drivers who use the Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, Betsy Ross, and Commodore Barry Bridges.

The DRPA initially considered increasing tolls up to $6.50, but eventually agreed on $6.

“This adjustment aims to balance financial needs for long-term capital projects and operational stability while complying with bond covenants” DRPA board chairman James D. Schultz said in a news release.

The last increase in tolls on DRPA bridges was in 2011.

The recent increase was previously delayed nine times.

“Whenever we make decisions regarding tolls, we must do them through the lens of fiscal responsibility, and most importantly, safety. The new schedule supports DRPA’s current high bond rating, which is crucial for effective cost management and financial stability,” Schultz said.

Schultz said the increase will allow DRPA to finish several big projects “with flexibility to adjust plans due to increased costs and inflation.”

The funds will also go toward bridge enhancements, security upgrades, infrastructure improvements, and the recruitment of police officers.

Toll discount programs are available for frequent commuters and senior citizens.

PATCO fares will not be affected by the increase.
