There were a number of celebrities who passed away within the past week, including two notable actresses: Shelley Duvall and Shannen Doherty. Shelley Duvall passed away on Thursday July 11th at her home in Blanco, Texas. The cause of death was complications from diabetes and news of her death was confirmed by her partner Dan Gilroy.

A picture (a video, in fact) is worth a thousand words. Consider one of Howard McGhee around 1966. It is at the Newport Jazz Festival All Stars, and an unlikely group of trumpeters is doing a bop tune at metronome-busting speed. The group includes Bobby Hackett and Ruby Braff (unlikely, no?). Hackett is delightedly laughing. Braff walks off into the wings sulking. Young Jimmy Owens has just upstaged Howard McGhee, to put it mildly. The guy selected to teach Owens a lesson on the second chorus is Dizzy Gillespie. McGhee, in the late 1940s known to be a Top Gun of the trumpet, does not even bother to play. He does enjoy Gillespie, for they are old friends. And Gillespie played, well, like Gillespie. By the 1970s, some music writers will refer to Howard McGhee as "forgotten." Sic transit Gloria Mundi. From Downbeat Poll winner (1949) to comeback player (early 1960s) to forgotten (1970s). The jazz life was never easy, and McGhee, a brilliant player, was at Ground Zero when it all blew up, fueled by race, drugs and a little too much time around Charlie Parker. It is another of those dreadful stories. It does not exactly have a happy ending, but it turned out better than McGhee would have thought possible in the early 1950s. This recording is an artefact of McGhee's hard-won rehabilitation. And it is a very good one. Mostly, it swings like mad.

Having a regular salary and a prestigious position would be considered as a successful achievement for many musicians. Israeli-born pianist and Amsterdam resident, Avishai Darash decided to buck the trend and gave up his position as artistic director and pianist for the innovative Marmoucha Orchestra to return to his solo career. Whilst stepping out of his comfort zone was not easy, he was now armed with knowledge gained from composing and arranging numerous albums with the orchestra and other projects. This has led to Between Hope and Despair, an album that allows him to use his arranging skills with influences from Israeli and North African traditional music, classical and jazz.

Some musicians toil for years to deliver a debut album, perhaps because composing does not come easily. A lack of confidence, or simply the financial burden of recording can also be inhibitors. Other musicians seem to hit the ground running. Liv Andrea Hauge, a pianist and composer from northern Norway belongs in the latter category. Just one week after first playing with bassist Georgia Wartel Collins and drummer August Glãnnestrand, Hauge recorded the trio on a low-key gig for friends in her living room. Pleased with the results, Hauge released Live from St. Hanshaugen (Self Produced, 2022), thirty-three minutes of music—the length of an old LP—that announced Hauge's merits as a gifted melodic composer (check out the gorgeous "Telthusbakken" on Bandcamp) and her trio as a flexible unit, one as comfortable with improvised adventure as with groove.

Any release by Norma Winstone is an event and Outpost Of Dreams, her much anticipated first album since 2018's Descansado (Songs For Films) (ECM), rises to expectations. It presents her in a new duo setting with pianist Kit Downes, a star in his own right who is equally on point as an accompanist. His sensitive, empathetic playing here is a delight in itself.

It's next to impossible to offer one piece that represents his entire, must-listen-to repertoire, however, "Goldberg Variation III" captures his classically-based training and dynamic trio in just 87 seconds.
