Tiger Woods has won three Open Championships, and Royal Troon has hosted nine. Never, though, has Woods won an Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The 48-year-old golfing legend believes there is still a chance to change that heading into the 2024 tournament.

"I'll play as long as I can play and I feel like I can still win the event," Woods said this week when asked whether this would be his last Open Championship. Woods also shut down retirement talks, explaining that he still feels confident about his health.

At the same time, a win at Royal Troon for Woods would be the stunner of all stunners. He's struggled to stay competitive in majors this year, and just making the cut would be seen as a major success for Woods in the year's final major.

The rest of Woods' group Thursday could help set a standard of excellence around him. Xander Schauffele is just two months removed from a PGA Championship win, while Patrick Cantlay is no stranger to major contention and finished third at the U.S. Open in June.

None have even come close to the levels of success Woods reached earlier in his career, but Woods is now undoubtedly considered the underdog in the trio he will tee off with Thursday.

Tiger Woods results, highlights from Round 1 at 2024 Open Championship

    (All times Eastern)

2:55 p.m. — Woods finishes his day with back-to-back bogeys, leaving him at 8-over for the round and 9-over in his final 15 holes. He's already 13 strikes off the lead and just four strokes from the bottom of the leaderboard.

2:35 p.m. — An impressive moment for Woods at No. 16 amid the struggles of the round.

1:26 p.m. — Woods bogeys No. 12 but rights the ship a bit with a birdie at No. 13. He's back to 6-over on the day.

1:05 p.m. — So much for settling in. Woods posts his second double-bogey of the day and moves to 6-over through 11 holes. He's beginning to teeter close to the bottom of the leaderboard.

12:34 p.m. — Woods settles for par at No. 9 and No. 10, so he's starting to settle back in after a rough stretch.

11:55 a.m. — Woods bogeys No. 8, so he's now 4-over on the day through eight holes.

11:33 a.m. — After a par on the five-stroke No. 6 hole, Woods bogeys No. 7 to move to 3-over. This isn't unusual considering the conditions today, but Woods has now slipped from 1-under to 3-over in a span of just four holes.

10:56 a.m. — Now it's coming undone for Woods as he double-bogeys No. 5, and this is how he got there.

10:44 a.m. — Woods comes back with a six-shot bogey on No. 4 to move to even on the day.

10:30 a.m. — Woods knew all the angles on the windy green at No. 3. He sinks his first birdie of the day to move to 1-under.

10:13 a.m. — Woods comes through with another par on No. 2.

9:58 a.m. — Woods starts his day with par, which he'll take in these ugly conditions.

9:15 a.m. — 12 players are under par, while 81 are over par to this point. It's been that kind of day at the Open Championship, where players are being tested like they were at the U.S. Open rather than the PGA Championship.

9:05 a.m. — Royal Troon has already proven to be a challenge for the world's best today. Tiger Woods is nearly 30 minutes away from trying his hand at the course and its conditions.

    Tiger Woods tee time today

Woods will tee off at 9:37 a.m. ET Thursday, along with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
