Ireland's 'marina capital' offers breathtaking experiences for tourists

While Ireland's coastal regions, particularly the stunning Wild Atlantic Way, often steal the limelight, it's worth noting that the country's inland towns and cities have their own unique charm. Counties like Galway, Donegal, and Kerry are rightly celebrated for their tourist appeal, but there's a wealth of beauty and culture to be discovered beyond these seaside locales.

Dubbed Ireland's Hidden Heartlands, there are several lesser-known counties nestled in the heart of the country that can add a different flavor to any visitor's Irish adventure. These areas may not offer sea views, but they're rich in history, vibrant, and beautiful in their own right, with a strong sense of local pride reflected in a thriving cultural scene filled with festivals and artistic energy.

One town that perfectly embodies the spirit of inland Ireland is Carrick on Shannon in County Leitrim. Situated on the banks of the River Shannon - Ireland's longest river - this western town is fondly referred to as 'the marina capital of Ireland', thanks to its popular waterways that attract boating enthusiasts and fishing aficionados alike.

A journey along the 224-mile river Shannon is an ideal way to soak up local history and traditions. Plus, as the Shannon meanders through 11 counties, it offers a chance to explore many Irish regions in one go.

Local boat tours are available and can be customized to suit any type of visitor, from party cruises to educational historical voyages guided by a local expert. Aside from the plethora of aquatic activities, Carrick - as locals often call it - is also steeped in history, dating back to 1607. History buffs should make a point of visiting Costello Chapel, a petite Catholic church built in 1879. Believed to be one of the world's smallest churches, this 16-foot by 12-foot sanctuary is truly tiny.

Carrick boasts a vibrant cultural scene, centered around the revitalization of the Dock. This former 19th-century courthouse, which overlooks the Shannon, has been transformed into a hub for the arts.

The Dock, a former courthouse, now houses a performance space with over 100 seats, arts education facilities, three art galleries, and artists' studios. It's also home to the Leitrim Design House. With its cafe and an array of displays, shows, drama, comedy, music, and art, it offers something for every artistic taste, making it a must-visit for tourists.

But community-based artistic and cultural activities aren't limited to the Dock. Every June, the five-day Carrick Carnival celebrates the cultural richness of Co Leitrim and the west of Ireland. Expect live music, diverse street performances, children's activities, and traditional amusements.

Despite having a population of just over 4,000, Carrick - partly located in Co Roscommon - boasts a large number of pubs and nightclubs. Thanks to its transport links - the town is on the Dublin to Sligo rail line - it's easily accessible from many parts of Ireland.

Coupled with its vibrant nightlife, Carrick has earned a reputation as the Irish capital for stag and hen parties. The county town of Leitrim is not lacking when it comes to its food. As is the case across the country in 2023, there is a booming dining scene.

The Oarsman is an award-winning restaurant in Carrick on Shannon that is recommended by the Michelin Guide, the bible of worldwide gastronomy. Whatever tickles your fancy in terms of food, your appetite will be sated in Carrick.

For a superb experience, off the beaten track when it comes to Irish tourism, a trip to Carrick on Shannon should figure highly on any visitor's itinerary.
