There's a special way to save money at Costco that many people might not know about -- because it's only available online. Online shopping makes up less than 10% of Costco's total sales. But if you only shop at Costco warehouses, you might be missing out on a great chance to save more cash. It's called Costco Direct.

Let's take a look at how Costco Direct works and how it can help you save big money on your next big-ticket purchases at Costco.

    What is Costco Direct?

Costco Direct is a special feature on Costco.com that gives you extra savings if you buy multiple items at the same time. The products that qualify for Costco Direct are often big-ticket items like appliances, furniture, and TVs -- items delivered to your home.

But with Costco Direct, the items you buy are delivered "directly" to you from the Costco distribution center, instead of you having to go to the Costco warehouse. Cutting out that extra stop on the journey can help you save more money by reducing Costco's fulfillment and delivery costs -- and Costco shares the savings with you.

Costco Direct offers the following extra savings:

    • Buy two items, save $100
    • Buy three items, save $200
    • Buy four items, save $300
    • Buy five or more items, save $400

To find Costco Direct savings, go to Costco.com and look for the "Costco Direct" tag.

Which items qualify for Costco Direct

Here are a few types of products that may qualify for Costco Direct extra savings:

    • Appliances: Including stoves, washing machines, dryers, and refrigerators
    • Fitness equipment: Such as treadmills, exercise bikes, and home weightlifting sets
    • Home improvement items: Like storage racks, power generators, and toilets
    • Patio, lawn and garden items: Including gas grills, riding lawn mowers, and outdoor furniture

Although Costco Direct is usually for higher-priced items, you can also find some deals on lower-cost products with prices ranging from $200-$500 each. For example, as of this writing you could buy these three lower-cost items with Costco Direct and save an extra $200:

    1. Hisense 55-inch LCD TV: $269 (price valid through July 21, 2024)
    2. Corson 89-inch Live Edge Table: $299.97
    3. Kingswood 45-inch Coffee Table: $349.99

Total cost for all three items: $918.96

Cost after $200 Costco Direct savings: $718.96

For this package of three items, the Costco Direct savings amounted to about a 22% discount. This is a great way to save big money on your next purchases for your home. Or if you buy four Costco Direct items that cost $300 each, you'll save $300 -- it's like buying four and getting one $300 item for free.

    Who should use Costco Direct

If you want to replace your fridge and living room furniture and get a new big-screen TV at the same time, Costco Direct can give you a lower credit card tab. Here are a few examples of situations when people should consider using Costco Direct:

    • Moving to a new home
    • Remodeling your living room
    • Helping a child move to college or outfit a new apartment
    • Upgrading the bedroom for a growing child who needs a "big kid bed" with a new mattress
    • Replacing multiple appliances at once

Don't assume that Costco Direct is only for the most expensive items. You might discover some exceptional deals on lower-price TVs, mattresses, appliances, and other surprising Costco "treasure hunt" items that you didn't know you needed.

    Bottom line

Costco Direct offers extra online savings that most Costco shoppers might not know about. If you're ever in a situation where you need to buy a few big-ticket items at once, Costco Direct lets you save an extra $100, $200, $300, or more when you buy multiple qualifying products at the same time. Whether you need a mattress, a refrigerator, a big-screen TV, furniture, or any other major purchase for your home, check Costco.com and look for the Costco Direct tag.
