San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has requested a trade, and FS1’s Speak host Emmanuel Acho had a strong take on the request .

Aiyuk has made it clear this offseason that he wants a new long-term deal. Since the two sides haven’t come to an agreement, he has now asked to be dealt.

When talking about the trade request, Acho said he believed the team just didn’t want to pay him, not that the team didn’t have the money to pay him.

“When somebody tells you they ain’t got money, that’s not what they mean,” Acho said. “What they mean is, they don’t have money for YOU… Aiyuk.”

Aiyuk is entering the last year of his rookie deal and is set to make $14.124 million. A.J. Brown, Amon-Ra St. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle have signed long-term deals, and he would like to join that group.

Last season, Aiyuk caught 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, and in his mind, there is no better time to get a contract extension.

The 49ers have dealt with this in the past

This isn’t the first time that the 49ers have dealt with a player requesting a trade.

During the 2022 offseason, Deebo Samuel announced that he wanted to be traded, but the two sides ended up working out a deal worth up to $75.3 million over three years. Back in April 2019, Robbie Gould also requested a trade, but he ended up agreeing to a long-term extension with San Francisco.

The 49ers have remained steadfast throughout the process that they don’t want to trade Aiyuk, and it doesn’t seem their tune has changed yet.

Training camp is quickly approaching, and reports are that Aiyuk will hold out if he’s not traded or receives a long-term deal. Even though Aiyuk has requested the trade, if the 49ers come back to the table and offer a long-term deal that he feels is fair, it’s hard to imagine that he won’t sign the contract.

The 49ers may decide they do have the money to spend on a game-changing receiver like Brandon Aiyuk, but it appears right now that isn’t the case, and Acho is right.

Right now, the 49ers might have the money, but they don’t want to spend it on the former Arizona State Sun Devil.
