Amsterdam-based singer/songwriter Jana Mila will release her debut album Chameleon on August 30 via New West Records. Today, American Songwriter is proud to premiere the album highlight “In Between.” Listen to the introspective track below.
Chameleon is an aptly titled collection of songs. Blending folk, catchy country music, classic rock, and other sounds, Mila’s debut allows her to deliver a little something for everyone. However, at its heart, this is an album that the young singer/songwriter made for herself.
“The album is a conversation with myself, a way of getting to know myself better,” Mila said of her debut. “There are little fears woven into every lyric, but there’s also advice to myself. I’m writing to find a better part of myself that has some wisdom,” she added. So, Chameleon is both her introduction to the world and her journey of self-discovery.

“Going back and forth between revisiting the past and trying to imagine the future… I could easily spend most of my time inside my head, thinking about life instead of actually living it,” Jana Mila said of the inspiration for the song. “One Nashville afternoon, this little old idea of mine magically grew into ‘In Between,’ a song about trying to live in the moment and the challenges of finding your place in the world.”
It’s easy to see how Mila would get stuck in her thoughts. After all, one could call the lead-up to her debut album a whirlwind ride. After playing small shows around Holland for a couple of years, Mila caught the attention of Dutch country singer Ilse DeLange. Soon, DeLange took the young singer/songwriter under her wing and helped her take a trip to Nashville to hone her songwriting craft.
She spent two weeks in Music City writing songs, building ideas, and making new friends. One of those friends was producer/songwriter/musician Todd Lombardo. Not long after her first trip to Nashville, she was back in Lombardo’s studio putting down tracks for her debut album.
