CNN’s Kasie Hunt Presses Dem Rep Claiming Biden Can Still Win: ‘Why Don’t You Believe’ the Polls?

CNN’s Kasie Hunt pushed back on Rep. Jennifer McClellan (D-VA) as the lawmaker held the line for President Joe Biden and claimed polls are “all over the place” and he can still win against Donald Trump in November.

McClellan joined Hunt on CNN This Morning on Thursday, and Hunt began the interview by noting a senior Democratic advisor had told the network Biden is becoming more “receptive” to conversations about him dropping out amid concerns about his age and stamina. She also referenced a new report suggesting Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) privately met with Biden about concerns that he could not only lose the election, but also lose Democrats any control in Congress.

McClellan said she has a “different view” from not just Pelosi, but other top Democrats questioning Biden’s chances at victory in November.

“Former Speaker Pelosi, Hakeem Jeffries , and [Chuck] Schumer have relayed concerns of some members of the House and Senate caucuses. I have a different view,” she said. “I believe Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the ticket we have now, can win and I believe Democrats are united behind defeating Donald Trump this November.”

Hunt pushed back, asking why McClellan and the president himself don’t believe the polling that’s come out since the CNN debate last month.

“I don’t doubt that they’re united behind beating Donald Trump, I just have to push back. What convinces you that Democrats can win or that the president can win,” she said. “When you look at these and we can put some of them up, states where he’s lost ground after the debate — the conversations I’m now having with people are focused on states like Minnesota and New Hampshire potentially going for Republicans. Can you help explain? Cearly President Biden doesn’t believe a lot of this polling data. Why don’t you believe it?”

McClellan argued polls are “all over the place,” something Hunt immediately corrected.

“But they’re not all over the place. They’re simply not,” she said.

A Politico poll was released this week showing a number of other Democrats performing more favorably than Biden, and an Associated Press poll found nearly two thirds of Democrats want Biden to drop out .

McClellan refused to budge, arguing it was always going to be a “close election,” and noting Biden was up three points in Virginia in a Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) poll after the debate. Hunt pushed back on this too, citing the fact that Biden was leading by double digits in the state in 2020.

“It is still early in this election and the Biden campaign has started knocking on doors, has been going to voters where they are, communicating, and those messages are breaking through,” McClellan said. “Outside of the media, a lot of voters have not started paying attention until recently.”
