Abandoned German Shepherds found dumped in a cage under bush

Two emaciated German Shepherd dogs were rescued from a tiny cage under a bush.

Buffy and Tia, one-year-old German Shepherd dogs, were found starving, covered in dirt, and surrounded by their own waste in a tiny cage in Birmingham.

The RSPCA saved the pair of dogs from neglect in May 2024, with Buffy weighing only 17.5kg.

The two dogs are likely sisters, and have been with Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home for eight weeks after three weeks in hospital.

The RSPCA don't know how long Buffy and Tia were in the cage.

The inspector who found the two dogs was horrified at their overgrown nails.

Named only as Kate, she said: “They got them out the cage and I could see how thin they were, and the fact they thought it was going to be acceptable to leave them in this cage, I just thought, I'm not leaving these dogs here.

“And now to know they are with The Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home and getting all the love and care they need makes me so happy.

“To get that outcome is the whole reason I do the job."

Buffy and Tia are now on the road to recovery at The Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home, in Gloucestershire.

Tia, an animal care assistant said: “I’ve had the absolute pleasure of being Tia’s main carer. Watching her turn from being so anxious and stressed, into the cheeky, confident, loving and crazy dog that she is now has been my greatest pleasure.

"She is truly the best sidekick. She will make the perfect companion for someone."

Buffy was diagnosed with hip dysplasia after an x-ray and now undergoes hydrotherapy and is receiving ongoing pain relief.

She now weights 25.1kg.

Due to both dog’s muscle loss, they require regular, gentle exercise and interaction and they follow a strict meal plan with small, frequent meals.

Their traumatic experience in close quarters together means the pair prefer space away from each other and will be looking for separate new homes.
