Liverpool has confirmed it has been hit by a cyber attack that has led to tickets sales being suspended .

Tickets went on sale to members for home Premier League games during the first half of the season on Wednesday, but were hit with problems from the off . The club’s system crashed within a short time of the sale for those with 13+ Premier League credits from last season going live.

" Liverpool FC would like to apologize to all supporters experiencing issues during this morning's sale," a message to fans in the queue read.

"An issue with the ticketing system has been identified and the sale has been suspended while this is rectified."

Users were told the sale would resume later in the day, but those plans were abandoned. Thursday’s sale for members who were successful in a ballot was also shelved.

It has now emerged that Liverpool was the victim of a cyber attack, with the club emailing fans to apologize for the problems experienced. The issues were blamed on a “sustained, sophisticated bot attack… different in nature to those we have experienced before”.

According to The Athletic , an investigation has now been launched to find out how the attack happened, and whether there was any motivation other than to simply cause disruption or buy tickets fraudulently.

“This is hugely disappointing and frustrating as we have made a number of significant improvements to our supplier’s ticketing system to try and prevent this type of cybercrime,” the email to supporters said.

“We will continue to work with our fan groups to improve the selling processes and systems and will consider all options that will eventually deliver the experience our fans deserve.

“We are sorry we have not managed to prevent unacceptable fraudulent activity which has impacted our genuine and valued supporters.

Extra security measures will be put in place before Liverpool announces a new date for the sale to resume.
