Teen Volunteers to Clean Up Alameda Parks and Beaches

Operation Green Sweep offers hands-on experience in conservation and community engagement

Alameda Recreation and Parks Department ( ARPD ) has launched a new environmental stewardship program called Operation Green Sweep that will empower teens (and tweens) in grades 6 through 12 to take an active role in protecting local parks, beaches, and recreational areas. The program meets every Monday and Friday morning at various locations around the city and runs through August 2.

Through the program, ARPD aims to instill environmental stewardship skills in the youth population and build a sense of pride and responsibility in the community. The program also provides an opportunity for teens to develop practical skills and experience in conservation techniques, landscaping, and teamwork.

The core of the program is driven by environmental education. Through hands-on activities such as trash cleanup and the removal of chemically treated wood, participants will learn about the importance of sustainable practices and witness firsthand the impact of human actions on natural habitats. The program also emphasizes community engagement and skill development.

ARPD is collaborating with the East Bay Regional Park District and 100K Trees for Humanity to leverage resources and expertise in order to ensure the success of the program. The partners help coordinate cleanup events, restoration projects, and educational workshops that maximize the program’s impact on the community.

Trash cleanup is a cornerstone of the program, where teens work together to gather and dispose of litter to maintain cleanliness and prevent environmental degradation. The removal of chemically treated wood from park and shoreline areas helps to preserve ecological integrity, while also focusing on proper disposal and recycling practices. The program also provides opportunities for participants to contribute to the vitality of local green spaces by planting native trees and plants, enhancing biodiversity, and enriching the aesthetic appeal of recreational areas.
