Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa Gets Intriguing Advice From NFL Analyst

One of the storylines people are keeping a close eye on heading into training camp this year involves the Miami Dolphins. When will quarterback Tua Tagovailoa get his contract extension?

This offseason we have seen several quarterbacks cash in on a booming market. Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions and Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars both landed massive extensions.

Last offseason, Tua Tagovailoa’s fellow draftmate, Justin Herbert, inked his own massive extension. All three of them are now inside the top four of quarterbacks pay in the NFL along with Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Whatever the reason may be, the Dolphins are biding their time when it comes to paying their franchise quarterback. Entering Year 5 of his career, Tua Tagovailoa is set to play out the 2024 season on his fifth-year option with a base salary of $23,171,000.

What can Tua Tagovailoa do to speed up this process? In the opinion of David Helman, he needs to start showcasing a little more cockiness.

“I came from Bama. I’m a 4,000 yard passer, I led the lead in passing. Hell yeah I expect y’all to do right by me,” Helman said about Tagovailoa during a recent segment on Speak on FS1.

The hesitancy that the Dolphins are showing to pay Tua Tagovailoa is a bit surprising. If they aren’t sold on him being their long-term answer at the position, where are they going to turn instead?

This team is too good to land a pick high enough in the draft to secure a top prospect. There isn’t another option waiting in the wings on the roster who could step in and perform as well as the Alabama product.

Also, the quarterback market isn’t going to get cheaper any time soon. If they are afraid of paying their quarterback market price currently, that price is only going to rise.

Around the NFL, other quarterbacks are seeking long-term extensions as well. The Green Bay Packers are working on a new deal with Jordan Love. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott could hit the open market in 2025 if the team doesn’t work out a deal.

Both of those players are in line for deals at least in the range of what Goff signed for; $53 million annually. His deal is the new baseline for the next wave of quarterback contracts, which will be surpassed in the near future once established stars such as Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen work out new deals as well.
