TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — It’s not just Floridians who love the hot weather. Alligators also become more active when things heat up.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) shared some safety tips for residents spending time near the water this summer.

    1. Avoid walking pets near bodies of water, and always keep them on a leash at least ten feet from the water’s edge.
    2. Swim only in designated swimming areas. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn, so avoid swimming at night.
    3. Leave alligators alone. Handling even small alligators can cause injury.

Anyone who sees alligator that poses a threat to people, pets or property, is asked to call the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
