When a product is recalled by the FDA, ongoing investigations may provide consumers with additional insights. To this end, an update has been made to the chocolate recall that was issued weeks ago. The product affected was created in a collaboration between two companies: Feve Artisan Chocolatier and Dandelion Chocolate. Together, they created what they call Chocolate-Covered Cocoa Nibs. Unfortunately, the packaging for this product did not indicate the presence of a tree nut allergen: hazelnuts.

This discovery was made on June 24, and it applied to a single batch of the cocoa nibs. As a result, a recall was made. Because those who are allergic to tree nuts can have a life-threatening reaction by consuming this type of product, the FDA initially classified this recall as Class I. This is their most severe warning and indicates the potential for severe health consequences or death. But that has since changed.

Now, the FDA is classifying this recall as Class II. This means the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” But what prompted this change? Weeks after the recall was made, there have been no reports of allergic reactions. As a result, it seems that the risk has lowered a bit.
