CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Stephen Colbert joked about Babydog, Republican West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice’s English bulldog, running for President, saying she would be better than Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy because “She takes her worm medication.”

Babydog became a massive hit after her appearance alongside the governor and Republican U.S. Senate candidate on Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Justice’s 60-pound English bulldog was featured in articles from The New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, and many more.

During a live episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he set up the segment on Babydog — which you can watch by clicking here — by playing the clip of her being brought on stage at the convention.

His first joke touched on Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), who has been in the spotlight ever since The Guardian in April revealed she wrote in her new book about killing a puppy she later said had been showing aggressive behavior .

“You fools! You can’t have a dog at the same convention as Kristi Noem,” said Colbert. “Run, girl, run! Fly! Be free! Stay away from the gravel pit.”

The “Do it for Babydog” vaccine sweepstakes was next. Colbert said, “It really says something about this election when a dog believes in science more than the candidates.” This was when the talk show host brought up Babydog running for President.

Colbert’s joke about worm medication is in reference to RFK Jr. revealing he had a brain worm that caused him brain fog and memory loss . The New York Times reported a doctor told Kennedy a worm in his brain that ate a portion of it and then died caused a dark spot visible on brain scans.

Gov. Jim Justice is the Republican candidate for one of West Virginia’s U.S. Senate seats. He beat challenger Rep. Alex Mooney with almost 62% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.

He will go up against Wheeling Mayor and Democratic challenger Glenn Elliott in November. The seat is currently held by Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV) who announced he would not run for re-election in 2024.

You can watch “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on WOWK-TV Monday through Friday at 11:35 p.m.
