The Central Mass. High School Sports Awards is proud to announce the player of the year nominees for girls' lacrosse. The winners were announced during the live show that took place June 26 at the Hanover Theatre.
The Central Mass. High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
Player of the Year
Caity Tyldesley
Grafton High
Senior, Midfield
Tyldesley finished her career in rare air as a four-time T&G Super Team selection, one who was honored as the Hometeam Player of the Year for the second straight season. She scored 75 goals and dished out 69 assists to finish tied for second in scoring in Central Mass. while leading the Gators to a 15-7 record and the second round of the Division 2 state tournament. Tyldesley, who captained the soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams this year, finished her career with 294 goals and 260 assists for a school-record 554 points. The most memorable moments of the season for this three-time USA Lacrosse All-American were defeating Leominster in overtime and edging Wachusett in the final to claim the coveted Central Mass. Class A championship for the first time in program history. Tyldesley, who aspires to pursue a career in the medical field, will major in allied health sciences and continue her lacrosse career at the University of Connecticut. She is the daughter of Barbara and Glenn Tyldesley of Grafton.
Jocelyn Hamilton
Grafton High
Junior, Attack
Hamilton scored 74 goals and added 32 assists to rank sixth in Central Mass. in scoring while helping the Gators go 15-7 and advance to the second round of the Division 2 state tournament. That included netting the 200 th point of her career in a win over Wachusett as the Gators claimed their first Central Mass. Class A championship. That was Hamilton’s most memorable moment in an electric season in which she and her teammates shared incredible chemistry on and off the field. Hamilton, who enjoys baking and trying new recipes along with playing soccer, running and walking, is interested in majoring in health sciences in college with a possible career goal of working in a hospital. She is the daughter of Kerri and Matthew Hamilton of Grafton.
Annie Harwich
Algonquin Regional
Senior, Defense
Harwich anchored the defense as the Titans went 11-8 and advanced to the Division 2 state tournament. Among the many honors earned by this team captain was being named a USA Lacrosse All-American and a Mid-Wach A first-team all-star. A Massachusetts State Field Hockey Coaches Association Best of 60 senior all-star game selection, Harwich helped the Titans reach the quarterfinal round of the Division 1 state tournament in the fall. Harwich will continue her field hockey career and major in early childhood education at Endicott College with the career goal of becoming an occupational therapist and working with children with special needs. She is the daughter of Mani and Jack Harwich of Southborough.
Meghann Jones
Wachusett Regional
Senior, Midfield
Jones netted 84 goals and added 21 assists to rank seventh in Central Mass. in scoring as the Mountaineers went 13-6 while winning the Mid-Wach A championship and advancing to the Central Mass. Class A final and Division 1 state tournament. This two-year captain — she also captained the cross-country team in the fall — finished her career with 295 points, including a program-record 246 goals. Her most memorable moments in a season during which the Mountaineers set a program record for wins were qualifying for the CMass tourney for the first time in her career and then upsetting top-seeded Westborough in the opening round. Jones will major in business and minor in economics and continue her lacrosse career at Iona University. She is the daughter of Kristina and Michael Jones of Princeton.
Jennaveve (Jenna) Koch
Groton-Dunstable Regional
Senior, Attack
Koch scored 58 goals and picked up 15 assists to rank first on her team and fifth in Mid-Wach B in scoring as the Crusaders went 10-9 and reached the second round of the Division 3 state tournament. The Mid-Wach B MVP also excelled with 65 draw controls and finished her career with 236 goals and 322 points. Her most memorable moments of the season were defeating Tahanto on Senior Night and an overtime win against Wakefield in the first round of the state tournament. Koch, whose many varied interests include disc golf, gardening, hiking and snowboarding, will major in biology and continue her lacrosse career at Stonehill College with the career goal of working as a physician assistant. She is the daughter of Sandra and Carl Koch of Groton.
Rileigh Leary
Wachusett Regional
Senior, Midfield
This is the second T&G Super Team selection for Leary, who collected 63 goals and 69 assists to finish fourth in Central Mass. in scoring as the Mountaineers went 13-6 and qualified for the Division 1 state tournament after finishing first in the Mid-Wach A and reaching the CMass Class A final. She also amassed 141 draw controls and 65 ground balls. Leary, a two-time USA Lacrosse All-American and league MVP, finished her career with a school-record 351 points, split nicely among 172 goals and 179 assists, with 336 draw controls and 152 ground balls. Her most memorable moment of the season was defeating Leominster in overtime, a game in which she netted the decisive goal. Leary, who aspires to become a helicopter pilot, will continue her lacrosse career at the United States Coast Guard Academy. She is the daughter of Margaret and Sean Leary of Holden.
Fallon Lozano
Nipmuc Regional
Junior, Attack
Lozano netted 91 goals and picked up 29 assists to finish with 120 points for the second straight season, this time ranking fifth in Central Mass. in scoring after captaining the Warriors to a 15-6 record, the Central Mass. Class B final and the second round of the Division 4 state tournament. Lozano owns school records for most points as a freshman (120) and most goals (262) and points (346) through her junior season. Her most memorable moment of the season came when she reached the 300-point plateau in a midseason win over Notre Dame Academy. Lozano is committed to continue her lacrosse career at La Salle University, where she plans to major in business. She is the daughter of Crystal and James Lozano of Upton.
Emma Miller-Ayala
Leominster High
Senior, Midfield
Miller-Ayala struck for 64 goals and dished out 15 assists to finish in the top 20 in scoring in Central Mass. as the Blue Devils posted an 11-9 record and advanced to the second round of the Division 2 state tournament. She also had 98 draw controls. A four-year varsity starter, Miller-Ayala finished her career with 175 goals and 55 assists. Her most memorable moments of the season were defeating Mid-Wach A foe Shrewsbury twice and the way her teammates played together and stuck together while navigating a rigorous schedule. Miller-Ayala, who is interested in becoming a nurse or physical therapist, will major in health sciences and continue her lacrosse career at Quinnipiac University. The Leominster resident is the daughter of Almudena Ayala and Michael Miller.
Kaydie O’Neil
Tantasqua Regional
Junior, Midfield
O’Neil scored 55 goals and added 14 assists to lead her team and rank 10 th in the Mid-Mass. League in scoring while propelling the Warriors to a 13-7 record and a berth in the Division 2 state tournament. O’Neil also patrols the midfield for the Warriors soccer team in the fall and in her free time enjoys relaxing with her friends. The most memorable moment of the season for this Central Mass. first-team all-star came when she scored her fourth goal of the game to lift the Warriors to a 9-8 overtime win over Notre Dame Academy in a league matchup of tournament-bound teams. She is the daughter of Jen and Jim O’Neil of Sturbridge.
Julia Rubinow
Tahanto Regional
Freshman, Attack
What a fabulous freshman season it was for this prodigious point producer. Rubinow submitted a balanced line of 83 goals and 83 assists to lead Central Mass. in scoring for the second straight season as the Stags went 15-5 and advanced to the second round of the Division 4 state tournament. This two-time T&G Super Team selection also had 105 draw controls and now checks in with 572 career points with three years down and three years to go in her high school career. Her most memorable moment of the season was the total team effort the Stags put forth to defeat Nipmuc in the Central Mass. Class B championship. Rubinow aspires to play lacrosse collegiately at the Division 1 level and become a sports psychologist. She is the daughter of Jessica and Eric Rubinow of Boylston.
Alison Stevens
Tahanto Regional
Junior, Midfield
It was thrice as nice for Stevens as she was selected to the T&G Super Team for the third straight season after helping the Stags advance to the second round of the Division 4 state tournament before finishing 15-5. She scored a Central Mass.-best 115 goals and distributed 29 assists to finish tied for second in the region in scoring. Stevens, whose hobbies include snowboarding, was named a USA Lacrosse All-American and is committed to continue her lacrosse career at the University of Colorado. Her most memorable moment of the season came when the Stags defeated Nipmuc, a game in which she scored seven goals, to win the program’s first Central Mass. Class B championship. She is the daughter of Christine and Jim Stevens of Berlin.
Lily Villaflor
Westborough High
Senior, Attack
Villaflor did it all, scoring 49 goals and collecting 9 assists, 90 draw controls, 11 ground balls and 6 forced turnovers to help the Rangers go 17-4, finish first in the Mid-Wach B and reach the second round of the Division 2 state tournament. This two-year captain and two-time T&G Super Team and two-time honorable mention selection finished her varsity career with 130 goals, 31 assists and 284 draw controls in 65 games. Her most memorable moments of the season were defeating rival Algonquin — twice, no less — for the first time in her high school career. Villaflor will major in nursing and continue her lacrosse career at Xavier University. She is the daughter of Liz and Noel Villaflor of Westborough.
