Monica Precious Sibalo, a Zambian trailblazer, defied the odds to fulfill her dream of becoming a pilot in 2021.

Her inspiring story continues to captivate readers. Perseverance and passion mark her journey to become a pilot, highlighting the triumph of determination over adversity

Monica began her career at 18, working as a waitress in a local restaurant.

Despite her love for airplanes and a burning desire to become a pilot, the high costs of training seemed an insurmountable barrier. She diligently saved every penny from her waitressing job, never losing sight of her lofty ambition.

“Some people told me that I was wasting my time and that I should just settle for what I had. They said that flying was not for women, especially not for African women,” Monica stated in an interview, according to Rising Africa. “But I did not listen to them. I knew that I had a purpose and a vision, and I was determined to make it happen.”

After 12 years of unwavering commitment, Monica finally accumulated enough savings to apply for a scholarship at the Ethiopian Aviation Academy, one of Africa’s premier flight schools. Her hard work paid off when she passed the entrance exam and interview, securing her place in the program.

“It was a dream come true. I was so happy and excited to start my training. I knew it would be hard, but I was ready for it,” she said.

Monica completed her rigorous training in two years, graduating as a certified commercial pilot.

Today, she flies for Ethiopian Airlines, traveling to destinations worldwide.

“I love my job. It is amazing to see different places and cultures, and to meet new people. I feel like I am living my dream every day,” Monica shares.

Monica’s journey is not just a personal triumph but a beacon of inspiration for young girls and women with similar aspirations.

“I want to encourage them to follow their dreams and not let anything stop them. They can do anything they set their mind to, as long as they work hard and have faith. Nothing is impossible with God,” she advises.

Monica’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of perseverance and vision, showcasing how one can achieve greatness through determination and hard work, no matter the odds.

Similarly, Audrey Maame Esi Swatson of Ghana exemplifies aviation excellence. At 21, she became a commercial pilot and now serves as a First Officer with Passion Air.

Like Monica, Audrey’s journey is rooted in passion and perseverance. As CEO of Excel Aviation, Audrey commits herself to helping young women pursue careers in aviation, thus furthering the legacy of trailblazers like herself and Monica.

Both Monica and Audrey are shining examples of how dreams can soar with dedication and resilience. Their stories continue to inspire and empower the next generation of aviators.
