Mike McCarthy's odds to be first NFL head coach fired aren't good... for Mike McCarthy

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has been rightfully pilloried for his in-game decision-making and clock management for years, and it's put him on a bit of a hot seat with Jerry Jones. There was some talk that McCarthy might not survive the 2023 season, which ended for the Cowboys with a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers, but as Jones prefers coaches he can control, McCarthy is still around... for now.

But according to BetOnline , only Robert Saleh of the New York Jets has "better" odds to be the first NFL coach fired this season. Saleh stands at +500, and if Aaron Rodgers plays like Aaron Rodgers in 2024, you can pretty much drop Saleh way down the list. That would leave McCarthy as the first coach fired in these odds at +600.

And according to Ty Dunne's Go Long Substack , it's not just Jones who's aggravated -- McCarthy might be champing at the bit to be in a situation where his efforts aren't as... monitored. And when McCarthy is on a lame-duck deal, and the Cowboys have so far failed to extend their prominent stars in Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, it gets a bit complicated.

“At least give him a one-year extension,” one former Cowboys personnel man told Dunne of the McCarthy situation. “You may not have to give him another five years, but at least extend them out one year and extend out all the coaches one year to give them a level of security. But what they don’t want is to extend out Dak and then have to move on from him, and then there’s going to be a bunch of dead money there that they’re paying that he is not playing for you anymore.”

There's always drama in Big D, and this is just the latest entry.
