Science photo contest showcases microscopic marvels

Cute fish embryos and an armor-clad single-celled organism are highlights of a Tasmanian science photo competition.

They have made the shortlist in the Beaker Street organization's annual Science Photography Prize contest.

Showcasing a myriad of images from across Tasmania, the competition aims to capture the wonders of this extraordinary part of the world.

A 43-photo shortlist of entries has now been narrowed down to 12 finalist images, that have been chosen to feature in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery from 6 – 23 August.

Visitors will have the chance to vote for their favorite photo to become the People’s Choice Winner.

Highlights include Andrea Williamson's picture of the successful development of embryos of endangered red handfish. They are a significant milestone in conservation efforts led by the Red Handfish Conservation Team at Hobart's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies.

Luke Brokensha's cute image shows a single-celled coccolithophore organism found drifting in the Southern Ocean. They construct many intricate plates of armor - made of calcium carbonate - which they cover themselves with to protect their delicate internal cell from predation
