(WGHP) — While the gubernatorial race has drawn an expectedly high number of eyes and dollars, the North Carolina state superintendent contest was more unexpectedly thrust into the national spotlight after the primaries.

Incumbent Republican Catherine Truitt was defeated by far-right challenger Michele Morrow , who then received widespread scrutiny for past comments that elevated conspiracy theories.

Morrow, a nurse who homeschools her children, is now up against former Guilford County Superintendent Mo Green , who spent years working in public education before throwing his hat into the ring.

The media attention spurred a surge of donations in what is now a financially-competitive race. Both candidates have filed their second quarter reports with the North Carolina State Board of Elections, showing how much they raised from February to the end of June 2024.

Morrow started the quarter with $22,970 on hand. She received $206,974 overall in the quarter and ended the quarter with $50,661 after all of her expenditures.

Green had $142,061 on hand at the start of the quarter. He listed $667,132 in total receipts and ended the quarter with $578,384, more than 10 times Morrow’s total.

Morrow’s biggest campaign contribution was an in-kind contribution for campaign signs, totaling $20,375. She also received $6,400 from the CEO of Captiveaire, a kitchen ventilation repair company, and $4,000 from the CEO of the Roger Bacon Academy , a charter school in Leland.

Green’s largest contribution came from himself, around $9,500. He got $6,400 from the Committee to Elect Jonathan Melton , a Raleigh city council member; $6,400 from the chair of Replacements Ltd. ; and $5,000 from the president of the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation .

Throughout the election cycle, Green has brought in nearly a million dollars, $975,545, compared to Morrow, who has raised just over a quarter million overall, $255,293.
