NBC’s Open Championship Broadcast Sparks Similar Complaint From Golf Fans

Early Thursday morning, the 152nd Open Championship got underway from Royal Troon Golf Club.

With several players in the afternoon wave still on the course, Justin Thomas (68) and Shane Lowry (-3 thru 8 holes) currently lead the field by one stroke.

Fans tuning into coverage of The Open this morning were happy to see such a crowded leaderboard, however, many took to social media with similar complaints about NBC/USA Network's first-round broadcast.

Specifically, fans were confused by one major change to the scorecard graphic.

"I don't wanna be too dramatic here, but blue squares for pars is unhinged behavior," No Laying Up posted.

On a typical golf scorecard, birdies are often written in red numbers and accompanied by a circle surrounding the number scored on the hole. Bogeys, meanwhile, are usually denoted by a 'box.'

At this year's Open, every score to par - including par itself - is accompanied by a square surrounding the number.

As a result, fans are flooding to social media with criticisms of the new scorecard format.

"It's the scorecard equivalent of having blue flags front, red flags middle and white flags back. WE HAVE A SYSTEM IN PLACE, PEOPLE," Shane Bacon said.

Have you noticed the changes to the scorecard graphics at the 152nd Open Championship?
