Fargo fans may have to hunker down and wait a while before the next season of FX’s acclaimed crime anthology arrives.

With showrunner Noah Hawley now busy working on the sci-fi prequel Alien: Earth for FX, that show will be his priority for the foreseeable future, FX chairman John Landgraf tells our sister site Variety : “We’ve told him that assuming, as we hope, Alien: Earth is a returning television series, we want him to focus on at least writing two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of Fargo .”

The good news for Fargo fans is that Hawley says he’s already finished filming the first season of Alien: Earth : “We just wrapped production, so now I’m into the long post that gets into visual effects.” An extension of the blockbuster Alien film franchise, Alien: Earth stars Sydney Chandler ( Sugar ), with Justified veteran Timothy Olyphant joining the cast in November. Landgraf has previously teased that Alien: Earth is “set not too far into our future” and would be “the first Alien story to be set on Earth.” No premiere date has been set.

Fargo returned for Season 5 last fall, with a cast including Juno Temple, Jon Hamm and Lamorne Morris. It earned six Emmy nominations this week, including one for best limited series and acting nods for Temple, Hamm and Morris. The anthology has taken long breaks between seasons before, too: Season 5 aired three years after Season 4, which aired another three years after Season 3.

Are you willing to wait another three years for more Fargo ? Hit the comments to give us your thoughts, why dontcha.
