FRANKFORT, Ky. (WATE) — In the first six months of his administration, Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf shared that his office returned a total of $13,415,270.66 to Kentucky taxpayers and families.

A record total of $12,488,310.05 was returned to Kentuckians through the Treasurer’s Division of Unclaimed Property since January 1, 2024, when Metcalf took office. Unclaimed property refers to financial assets or belongings left inactive or unclaimed by the owner for a certain period, usually three years, when the assets are relinquished to the Treasury to safeguard. The property could include bank accounts, insurance policies, utility deposits, stocks, bonds, and the contents of safe deposit boxes.

An additional $926,960.61 was returned to taxpayers following the Treasury’s Division of Accounting and Disbursements reviewing checks that expired without being claimed issued by the Commonwealth to Kentucky taxpayers. This includes income tax refunds to residents and businesses of all sizes. According to a release, Metcalf directed his office to investigate why the checks had not been cashed and reissue payments to those who have not received their funds.

“Through the superior work of our staff, the Treasury has returned to Kentuckians over $13 million,” said Metcalf. “This significant achievement underscores our commitment to serving the people of the Commonwealth and ensuring that all unclaimed property and funds are returned to their rightful owners.”

For those who believe they may be unclaimed property owed to them, the Treasury maintains an online, searchable database . The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators also has a website where you can search participating state’s databases for unclaimed property .
