A documentary set to explore the life and work of the late music legend Prince has possibly been delayed before being finalized. According to Variety, the project is described as “dead in the water” by Prince’s estate with claims that a cut of the film was filled with “dramatic” factual inaccuracies and “sensationalized” retellings of moments from the singer’s personal life.

The documentary, directed by Ezra Edelman, had been in the works for four years. Set for Netflix, when first reported in 2018 the non-fiction film had Ava DuVernay at the helm. Per Variety, Edelman is “devastated” by the development.

Sources inform the outlet that the inaccuracies were “not revelations of drug use or sexual stuff,” issues were due to “control,” and overall the estate felt the doc was not positive . Edelman reportedly created a nine-hour visual, a violation of the six-hour agreement, that presumably enabled the estate to withhold music rights. Still, Netflix and Edelman maintain a final cut of the documentary.

Prince performs during day 2 of the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival held at the Empire Polo Field on April 26, 2008 in Indio, California.

While the documentary on Prince may be slowed down, fans of The Purple One can expect to see his genius brought to life. Earlier this year, L. Londell McMillan, chairman of The NorthStar Group, and Larry Mestel, founder and CEO of Primary Wave Music revealed the Purple Rain film is set to be adapted into a Broadway musical.

“We can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to honor Prince and the Purple Rain legacy with this stage adaptation of the beloved story,” relayed a joint statement. “We are thrilled with our Broadway partners and creative team, who are bringing a theatricality to the film’s original fictional story. We can’t wait for a new generation to discover Purple Rain and for lovers of the original film and album to experience its power once again, this time live.”

The stage adaptation is set to be based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, and will be written by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
