    Have you noticed an increase in horseflies, this is why

    CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – These bigger-than-average flying insects that stab you with knife-like mouthparts that are painful but not venomous, are horseflies.

    According to the Natural History Museum, horseflies are more active during heatwaves, when temperatures are 90 degrees or above for three or more consecutive days. Western Massachusetts has already seen double the amount of 90-degree days in comparison to 2023.

    Female horseflies are the ones that bite, seeking blood to help develop their eggs after fertilization. Many lay their eggs on plants near ponds, rivers, and streams or in damp soil.

    If you have seen an increase in horse flies around, Ortho says they are attracted to animal feces. They recommend cleaning up after your dog, securing trash cans with tight-fitting lids, and burning citronella candles while spending time outside.
