Over the past handful of months, Chappell Roan’s fame has grown extremely fast. With girly-pop beats, raw songwriting, and drag-inspired showgirl outfits, she’s captured the hearts of listeners everywhere. After her set at Coachella, she was a household name, with her track “HOT TO GO!” quickly becoming one of a few songs of the summer. Chappell is having an It Girl moment, but as she recently revealed, some fans are getting a little weird about it.
On the July 17 episode of the podcast The Comment Section with Drew Afualo, Chappell Roan opened up about the dark side of her sudden, organic rise to stardom. “People have started to be freaks,” she revealed. “Like, [they] follow me and know where my parents live, and where my sister works.” She added, “All this weird s–t.”
Due to “weird” behavior like this, Chappell shared a promise that she made to herself when she started on this journey—if any of her fans got weird, exhibited “stalker vibes,” or put her family in danger, she would stop making music. Clearly, she puts her family, their safety, and her own first, as she should. However, she shared that she can’t go out in public and do things she used to do, like “frolicking” or dancing at a club without being accosted.
“We’re there. We’re there!” she said. “I’m just kind of in this battle … I’ve pumped the brakes on, honestly, anything to make me more known. It’s kind of a forest fire right now. I’m not trying to go do a bunch of s–t.”

Sometimes, fans get weird, as we’ve seen with a large majority of Taylor Swift’s fanbase. There’s something that possesses people when a popstar gets a lot of recognition like this, especially when she’s almost an overnight sensation. Chappell Roan was on the radar before with the release of her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in 2023, but her incredible Coachella set put her smack-dab in the middle of the map.
Additionally, her performance at this year’s Gov Ball, where she dressed up like a drag Statue of Liberty, furthered her exposure to monumental levels. At a recent show, she even choked up when addressing her rise to fame, emotionally sharing with the crowd that she almost can’t keep up with it.
It’s not all bad, though. Chappell also admitted that she’s had good interactions with fans as well, along with people she admires. “People who I’ve looked up to my entire life are like peers, which is sick,” she said.
Overall, there are unspoken rules that come with being a fan of a celebrity or musical artist. There’s certain behavior you just don’t engage in, because these are real people just like us. What it boils down to is simple—don’t be weird.
