Have you ever browsed through a thrift store and stumble upon an item so dilapidated you think, "Wow, who would ever buy something like that?" Turns out, there are some people who specifically purchase only those broken and damaged pieces so that they can enjoy the process of bringing them back to life. And that's exactly what this creator does.

Instead of turning away from an ugly piece of furniture, she imagines a dozen different ways that she can up-cycle it into something beautiful. That's such an incredible skill to have!

Watch as she takes this ugly dresser from good to gorgeous using just a few simple tools.

When TikTok creator Jessica May Smith ( @theteddyjamesco ) saw this ugly peeling purple dresser for sale on Facebook Marketplace, she knew it had to come home with her. Despite the awful paint job and dilapidated wood, the dresser had a great shape and Jessica was determined to make something beautiful out of the mess.

Here's what she did to give it a total transformation! There's one trick that changed it all.

3 Steps to Totally Transforming Painted Furniture

This one definitely needed a ton of work.

    1. Paint strip

The purple obviously had to go! A simple paint stripping tool wasn't even getting close to removing the layers of paint so Jessica turned to chemical stripper for the rest. She applied the solution with plastic wrap on top and after a few hours she could finally rip it all off, paint included. What was underneath? Solid birch wood!

    2. Rinse and sand

In order to remove the rest of the remaining paint, Jessica rinsed the dresser with hose water and sanded the entire piece down to it's natural light wood color.

    3. Wood bleach and paint wash

In order to maintain that stunning light shade, Jessica applied a few coats of wood bleach to the dresser as well as a beige paint wash. After some new hardware, the piece was as good as new.
