Planning permission has been denied for apartments at the location of Sinéad O'Connor's former residence in Co Wicklow . The much-loved artist passed away on 26 July last year, with her first anniversary coming this Friday.

Fans are expected to gather in the coastal town of Bray to pay their respects, much like they did when news of her passing was announced. In the meantime, the proposed development for five apartments at the Montebello site on Strand Road where the Nothing Compares 2 U singer lived was rejected by An Bord Pleanala on Monday.

The works outlined in the planning submission included building five apartments, turning two storeys into three, and the demolition of the front conservatory/porch and two sheds. An Bord Pleanala has ruled that the proposed development would clash with the current streetscape, stating it would be "incongruous" and "out of character ".

The board's decision highlighted concerns over the project's intrusion on protected sea views and gardens. A final statement read: "The Board did not share the view of the inspector that the proposed development would not adversely impact or erode the architectural character of the site and surrounding area, or that it would not seriously injure the residential or visual amenities of the area or of property in the vicinity."

The board elaborated on its decision, adding: "The Board found that the proposed development, by reason of its design, scale and bulk, would seriously injure the amenities of the area, would adversely affect the architectural character of the seafront area, and would contravene a local area plan.

"Due to its design, scale, bulk and it's relationship with adjoining properties, the proposed development would be overbearing on the adjoining open space serving the apartment complex to the south and would also be overbearing to the rear garden serving the dwelling to the north."
