Kai Trump showed the power of humanizing her ‘normal grandpa’

At this year's Republican National Convention , former President Donald Trump’s granddaughter, Kai Trump, delivered a speech showing a level of humanity that could deliver this election to Trump on a silver platter. She appeared onstage with her father, Donald Trump Jr., and stole the crowd's heart with personal stories of her grandfather.

Her speech was full of quips and anecdotes about her grandpa.

“When we play golf together, if I’m not on his team, he’ll try to get inside of my head, and he’s always surprised I don’t let him get to me,” she joked. “I have to remind him: I’m a Trump, too.”

Watching the former president react to his granddaughter’s speech was different. Viewers did not see an angry or brash man. They saw a loving grandfather. Most people have experienced at least some semblance of a family member, usually a grandparent, spoiling them despite their parents' wishes.

We saw a genuine feeling, not some fake act put on to whip votes. Of course, people can say that Kai Trump’s speech was meant to do just that, but it was the former president’s reaction that was more important to watch. We saw the second Kai Trump took the stage, Donald Trump's gaze softened away from the intense nature we typically see. When she gushed, “He always wants to know how we are doing,” he shyly smiled. Donald Trump's reaction was the same one the rest of us would have while watching a family member rave over our existence.

The key to Trump’s 2016 victory lies in reaching out to those who felt neglected by the political establishment. Re-engaging these voters, along with attracting others who feel disconnected from politics, will be crucial to his success once more.

The key to doing this will be instances like this, because it will show he has not fully been taken by the “political swamp.” He will combat some of the concerns about his annoying attacks. After all, the old moniker that voters want to elect someone they want to have a beer with is true. This speech perfectly contrasted with the typical Donald Trump and humanizes him.

This will bring him more votes and propel him to the presidency.
