BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – Affordable housing is an issue that spreads across all demographics.
However, it seems one age group is being hit hard.

The elderly are now facing a housing crisis, even those who may already have homes. Their homes are falling into disrepair, and they cannot either afford to fix them or struggle physically.

A Director of Social Services at the Raleigh County Commission on Aging says the housing market can also lead to poor health.

“A lot of times it’s due to lack of home repairs. If their home starts to become dilapidated, they have to move into an apartment. That can lead to being depressed because they are unhappy,” said Crystal Foley, the Director of Social Services at the Raleigh County Commision on Aging.

Loss of housing can also lead to lack of independence. This can lead to depression, anxiety and may lead to mental decline.
