‘The Boys’ Star Claudia Doumit Dishes On That Gut-Wrenching Season 4 Finale: “I’ve Been Waiting For It”

The Boys Season 4 proved to be a whirlwind of a season.

Looking back, it’s truly miraculous to see how much action, violence, and drama they jam-packed into just eight episodes. But the Season 4 finale featured one more shocking twist: Victoria Neuman ( Claudia Doumit ) coming back around to the good side.

Victoria has been a welcome addition to The Boys since the savvy progressive joined Season 2. While Homelander aims to put supes in power and The Boys aim to kill them, Victoria has always been driven by her survival instinct. She’ll stop at nothing to keep herself and her daughter Zoey safe — even if that means teaming up with someone as “erratic and volatile” as Homelander.

But Homelander’s grip on the situation seemingly slips in the Season 4 finale, causing him to lash out at Victoria in order to keep her in line, giving her a glimpse into what a so-called “presidency” by Homelander’s side will be like.

“Oh, God, she doesn’t want to be in that alliance. No, she she very much thought that the deal that she made with Homelander was one and done,” Doumit recently told DECIDER . “That is a terrifying space for Neuman to be in.”

That explosive Season 4 finale of The Boys left viewers with more questions than answers. But it certainly set up what is sure to be an equally violent, raunchy and slightly traumatizing (sorry Hughie) ride in Season 5.

As Nathan Mitchell , who plays Black Noir, told DECIDER , “We get to a gut wrenching place where the stakes are high and we’re really kind of wondering how they’re going to pull this off, which makes an exciting kind of a wait between Season 4 and 5 to see how it all ends.”

DECIDER: Did you know that Victoria’s story was going to end this way? Did you get a warning?

CLAUDIA DOUMIT: I had a very strong feeling that Neuman was going to die this season. And it’s really funny, because every season that I’ve been on this show, I’ve thought she’s going to die. I’ve been waiting for it. I thought she was going to die in Season 2, I thought she was just going to be in a couple of episodes. I thought she was going to die in Season 3, and now it was Season 4, and it’s happening. So funnily enough, I feel like I grieved myself or Victoria Neuman’s death three seasons in the making.

But the hardest thing about it is really just saying goodbye to the incredible cast and crew that I’ve been able to work with on this show for the past few years. More so than anything, I’m really going to miss that because it’s such a brilliant group of people that that get to come together for eight months out of the year and just create this insanely beautiful show.

What was your last day on set like?

I was having such a fun day. I was just running around, giving everyone their wrap gifts. And I was having a ball, I was actually having such a fun time. And it didn’t really hit me until the scene was over and I was wrapped and I was sitting in my trailer just coated in blood, and I sat there, and I finally started crying, because it was the moment I realized, like, ‘Oh, I’m never going to be able to put this character on again. I’m never gonna get to walk in her Louboutins and her power suits and enter a room and pop a head.’ Like it was a weird, surreal, funny kind of grieving that happened in the trailer at just like 11 p.m. on a Wednesday.

Well, is this really goodbye for Victoria Neuman?

I don’t know. I don’t I have no idea. No one does. But, I mean, she’s dead. That feels pretty… I think when you cut a character in half, it pretty did.

Do you think she would have had a different outcome if she started working with the Boys?

That’s the sad thing about it is that she could have very much ended up in a different position had she reached out, had she made the right choices, had she chosen a different path. But I mean, that’s the show. This show lives in a very morally gray realm with very moral gray characters who don’t necessarily make the right choices.

I think the tragedy and the heartbreak, but also the draw of the show, is watching those characters make these decisions and deal with the consequences… I think they highlight that, especially with the relationship with Hughie this season and Neuman, very much. There is a part of her that that does want to go with him, that does want out, and especially in episode seven, I think she’s teetering… Because she knows that she’s gone past the point of no return, and that terrifies her.

Speaking of The Boys , how has it been playing arch-enemies on the show opposite your real-life partner?

It’s always so much fun to work with Jack. He gives you so much. It’s almost hard not to laugh because he’s such a riot at the time. So whenever it’s a serious moment, you always just kind of have to laser-focus when the scene begins. But it’s endlessly entertaining to work with Jack, and I think there’s been a real journey between Vicky and Hughie over the season.

They’ve started out very buddy-buddy, and then the betrayal happens, and now all bets are off and they’re having very brutally honest conversations with each other. There’s a lot of history there and a lot of betrayal. It’s a very interesting conversation between two characters who have so much history and loss of friendship there.

How does it feel to say goodbye to Victoria?

It feels bittersweet. I feel sad that I just won’t get to work with my friends every day and I feel sad to leave such a brilliant show with incredible people. I know that sounds boring as an answer, but that’s mostly what I’ll miss.

But also at the same time, I think it’s perfect for the story, because we only have one more season, and there’s no part of me that feels bad or wronged or shortchanged by any of that. Like, definitely kill her off. Kill Victoria Neuman. Because there are so many other storylines that you need to dig into in the span of eight episodes for Season 5. So I know that my character isn’t going to be the only one that’s getting a lovely, violent death, because the show is The Boys .
